How We Tested

We vacuumed daily with both machines across alternating weeks, timed each full-floor pass, weighed the dustbin contents after each cleaning, and measured battery runtime with a stopwatch at both standard and max modes.

Suction was measured indirectly via a cotton-ball pickup test calibrated against a new Miele C3 canister (the cord-bound reference). On dense pile carpet it pulls less embedded dirt per pass than the Stratos, and the runtime advantage disappears because you end up on max mode constantly. At that point, buy the Stratos or step up to the Tineco Pure One S15.

Do not buy the R20 if you are replacing a Dyson V15 or V16. The feel, the balance, the trigger action, all of it is lower tier than Dyson at twice the price. You will notice. Who should NOT buy the Shark Stratos

Do not buy the Stratos if your primary cleaning job is hardwood or tile. You are paying for 180 AW of suction that is wasted on hard surfaces. The R20 cleans hard floors just as effectively at a lower weight and longer runtime. The Stratos is a carpet specialist.

Do not buy the Stratos if stairs matter. 9.6 pounds is a genuine ergonomic cost on stairs. By tread 4 of a 13-tread staircase, your forearm is tired. We timed stair cleaning at 4.2 minutes with the R20 and 5.8 minutes with the Stratos, and the Stratos fatigue spike at tread 10 is where the numbers show up.

Do not buy the Stratos if 40 minutes of runtime is not enough for your home. A 2000+ square foot home with mixed surfaces will need two battery charges on the Stratos, which means charging a spare battery or cleaning on alternate days. The R20 clears the same floor on one charge.
